Acupuncture for Migraines and Headaches

Headaches and migraines are complex events, involving both the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system. Stress, neck stiffness, and poor sleep are common contributors, often more than one at once. Rather than treating each headache as an isolated event, we take a targeted, multi-modality approach designed to address the underlying pattern.

Our Approach

1. Targeted Care for Head and Neck Tension

We use precise techniques to help calm irritated nerves and ease tension that commonly contributes to headaches and migraines:

Acupuncture: Draws on both traditional and modern acupuncture frameworks, balancing the body’s energy while calming the nervous system and targeting the neural pathways involved in your pain.

Electroacupuncture: Applies gentle electrical currents to selected points, designed to help manage symptoms of pain and discomfort by assisting to calm neurophysiological pathways and reduce localised tension.

Nervous System Care: Helps calm the body’s stress response, a common contributor to tension headaches and migraines.

Remedial Massage: Works on tight neck and shoulder muscles at the base of the skull, to ease physical tension linked to headache patterns.

2. Comprehensive Headache Assessment

We assess the broader picture behind your headaches to help identify possible contributing factors:

Neck and upper spine screening: Checking the alignment and mobility of the upper neck, a common contributor to tension-type headaches.

Posture assessment: Looking at how forward-head posture may place strain on the neck and contribute to headache patterns.

Trigger and pattern mapping: Discussing what tends to bring your headaches or migraines on (stress, sleep, diet, or other factors) as part of your first assessment.

3. Long-Term Prevention

Our aim is to ease acute symptoms while building habits that help reduce recurrence:

Targeted strengthening: Exercises builds endurance in the deep neck muscles to help maintain posture.

Stress and lifestyle guidance: General guidance to help regulate your nervous system and reduce stress-related triggers.

Ongoing acupuncture care: Scheduled sessions works to ease your general stress levels and headache frequency over time.

Common questions

Can acupuncture help migraines? Acupuncture is widely used to ease pain and manage stress associated with migraines and tension headaches. As with any treatment, individual response varies, and your practitioner will discuss what’s realistic for your specific pattern during your consultation.

My headaches seem connected to stress or poor sleep, can you treat all of that together? Yes. Assessing how stress, sleep and headaches relate to one another is part of a standard consultation here, rather than treating each as a separate issue.

How quickly might I notice a difference? This varies by person and by how long the pattern has been established. Your practitioner will talk through a realistic timeframe after your first assessment.
